Pro Volleyball Federation Draft tracker
The 2024-25 PVF draft kicks off on Nov. 25 at noon eastern time.
Draft day is upon us! Across five rounds, the best graduating players from the NCAA ranks will be drafted by PVF teams to become pros.
According to the PVF website, each team will have eight minutes to make their selection during the first two rounds, and five minutes during the final three rounds. The draft order was determined in October via a somewhat complex system that takes into account both playoff results and a lottery. Each team will be making selections from its home office rather than at centralized draft location, but the whole thing will be broadcast live on YouTube here.
Unlike in many other sports, players do not have to declare for the PVF draft in order to be selected. Instead, every player who it at least 18 years old and played the 2024 season at a university or junior college is deemed eligible for the draft. This rule is presumably in place to preserve players’ NCAA eligibility if they are selected but would rather return to play another season of college ball.
Teams aren’t simply left in the dark when making a draft board, though. There are rules-compliant ways for teams to reach out to players and determine whether they’d be open to being drafted. It’s my understanding that most players selected this afternoon, if not all of them, will have already verbally agreed to play in the PVF.
Every player selected in last year’s draft was out of NCAA eligibility, and I expect the same to be true during this year’s event. PVF prestige and player salaries have not advanced to the level yet that abandoning their degree would be a wise decision for an underclassman, a fact that leaves teams with little leverage to draw them out of school. The rare exception may be a player such as Colorado State hitter Malaya Jones, who wore the redshirt twice to begin her career and is now a graduate student with remaining eligibility.
League One Volleyball (LOVB) has made a sincere effort to establish NIL relationships with the best players in college volleyball, such as Sarah Franklin and Lexi Rodriguez. It’s doubtful the PVF has interest dedicating their resources in going to war over a handful of players, which may result in some high-profile collegiate stars in going undrafted.
Both drafted players and the rights to picks may be traded, which resulted in two draft-day swaps being negotiated last year. A team to keep an eye on for potential trades is the Atlanta Vibe, who hold the rights to six draft picks and already have 17 players under contract, three over the maximum allowable active players on a PVF roster. Each team may bring 25 players into training camp, which means the Vibe could hold onto all of their picks, but they may rather have future draft capital or a quality veteran instead.
You can check out my PVF draft watchlist here. Drafted players with their names in bold have been featured here on my website. Enjoy the event! Post-draft analysis will be forthcoming in the days to follow.
